Most of the therapist marketing content online is written for American clinicians. Many of the best-known therapist marketing agencies are US-based, and their case studies, templates, and examples reflect US licensing, insurance panels, and privacy law.

Canadian practices can still work with US agencies, and some do well with them. But several parts of the work change north of the border, and an agency that does not adjust can create real problems with your college. This guide explains what changes. For our own Canadian service, see our therapist marketing agency page.

    1. Regulators and advertising standards

In the US, therapists are licensed by state boards, and credentials like LPC, LMFT, and LCSW are common. In Canada, regulation is provincial and done through colleges. In Ontario:

    • Registered psychotherapists answer to the CRPO.
    • Social workers answer to the OCSWSSW.
    • Psychologists answer to the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario.

Each treats your website, ads, social posts, and Google Business Profile as advertising. Common restrictions include testimonials, guaranteed outcomes, superlatives, and inaccurate titles. US agency templates often feature client testimonials prominently, which can conflict with Canadian college rules. See social media advertising rules for therapists in Ontario.

    2. Titles and credentials

A US agency may default to "licensed therapist" or "LPC" language. In Ontario, the protected titles are different: Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Registered Social Worker (RSW), Psychologist, and so on, with specific rules on qualifying titles. Using the wrong title on a website is easy to miss and important to get right.

    3. Privacy law and tracking

US agencies usually frame privacy around HIPAA. Canadian practices operate under PIPEDA and provincial health privacy laws such as Ontario's PHIPA. In practice, the safe approach is similar: never send what a client types into a form to an analytics or ad platform, and measure only that an inquiry happened. Ask any agency how their tracking handles this.

    4. Insurance and funding

US marketing often revolves around insurance panels and in-network status. Canadian clients usually pay privately and claim through extended health benefits, which typically cover specific professions such as RP, RSW, or psychologist. Some clients also come through EAP networks. Marketing that explains coverage clearly converts better in Canada. See private pay vs insurance therapy.

    5. Search behaviour and spelling

Canadian clients search for "counselling", "therapist near me", and city names such as Mississauga or Kitchener. Ads and pages written with US spelling and US place-name patterns tend to perform slightly worse and read as foreign. Location targeting also needs to reflect provincial licensure for virtual practices.

    6. Pricing, currency, and tax

US agencies usually bill in USD. With the exchange rate, a $1,000 USD retainer can cost noticeably more in CAD, and fees may not include HST in a way your accountant expects. A Canadian agency billing in CAD with HST shown clearly makes the true cost easier to compare. Our pricing is published in CAD.

    7. Google Ads policy

Google's healthcare and mental health ad policies apply in both countries, but certification requirements and restricted categories can differ by country. See Google Ads healthcare policy for therapists.

When a US agency can still work well

    • Your agency has other Canadian clients and can show compliant examples.
    • You give them your college's advertising standard and review every page yourself.
    • The work is mostly technical, such as ad account structure or site speed, rather than copy.

    Questions to ask any agency

    1. How many Canadian therapy clients do you work with now?
    2. Which college regulates my profession, and what does it restrict?
    3. How does your tracking avoid capturing client information?
    4. Do you bill in CAD, and is HST included or added?
    5. How will you describe extended health coverage on my site?

    Bottom line

The fundamentals of therapist marketing are the same in both countries: be visible where clients search, show fit clearly, and reply quickly. The details that keep you compliant and convert Canadian clients are different. If an agency cannot answer the five questions above, keep looking.
